Black Cumin Seed

Black Cumin Seed (Nigella sativa) is a valuable oilseed distinguished by its high nutritional value and functional component content. The seeds contain an average of 30-40% oil, 20-23% protein, and significant levels of fiber, minerals (calcium, iron, zinc, phosphorus), and B-group vitamins. The oil fraction is rich in essential fatty acids, particularly linoleic and oleic acids, and provides a high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Additionally, naturally occurring thymoquinone, phenolic compounds, and tocopherols impart potent antioxidant properties to black cumin. Due to this nutritional and bioactive structure, black cumin serves as a valuable raw material for food, supplement, and cosmetic applications. The plant is native to the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East and is widely cultivated in regions including Turkey, the Middle East, Southwest Asia, and North Africa.
